Meet the Artist!

Frances Wells was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She is the granddaughter of the late Eloise Long Wells, a Mississippi River painter. When Frances was a child, she shared a studio with her grandmother. The studio was called “The Pilot House,” the highest point on a river boat, from which the pilot navigated the ever changing, often treacherous, but beautiful Mississippi River.

Frances graduated from Bennington College where she studied literature and art. The mother of three daughters, she authored two books on parenting: “Babysense” and “Mothers Talking” both published by St. Martin’s Press.

When her family moved from the city to South Nyack in 1984, Frances returned to painting.  Her primary subject was and still is the Hudson River. Over twenty-five years ago, she had a show at the Valley Cottage Library. Since then she has exhibited in Manhattan, St. Louis, Vermont and Maine.

This November she is delighted to return to Valley Cottage with recent paintings of the beautiful river.
