Artist statement:
I draw inspiration from different places and objects in my life. Inspiration emerges out of my consistent and diligent effort. I like to mold and manipulate materials and bend them to my will; this is at the heart of my creative efforts. I want to remake in another medium the reality of an image that excites me. The sources I use are vast in terms of their thematics and textures: the abstract qualities of shape, surface and color, paired with the cultural synthesis which spans the entirety of the history of art. All these things are at my disposal.
In my own work, I feel that the greatest images I've done emerge out of the unconscious. The image which comes out of the depths of what we call the unconscious are better than the ones we set out to make. This element of visual surprise is the reason that I make images, to surprise myself and, if I'm lucky, create a sequence of images which are the afterbirth of this visual surprise. There is a zen quote, "A single arrowhead breaks through ten barriers", which I can relate to my understanding of how series may be borne. After all, once an arrow is shot, it moves independently from the bow and seems to take on a life of its own. I feel the same way about my own work. I am simply a vessel or channel for images which take on a life of their own once my brush leaves the canvas.
